Timber Frame interior elements, outdoor stairs and patio at The Bean Scene Coffee Shop, Vernon, BC.
Expanding Shop: When owner and creative mastermind, Phil, of the Bean Scene first decided to expand his coffee shop to include a nice upstairs area for his customers to relax in, he planned to build the new mandatory fire escape stairs out of steel. After meeting with European Timberframe however, he learned that steel is not always the best option. If the big, thick timbers used in timber frame construction happen to catch fire, they soon form a coal layer around the outside which slows down the burning process significantly. So, while steel will melt once it reaches a certain temperature, the timberframe skeleton usually remains intact in large fires. This is often seen in Europe, where timber frame construction is more common... the building is left with nothing but a charred timber frame shell.
Another exciting feature of this project is the 22' solid douglas fir bar top installed along the window of the upper floor.
The interior stairs and railings, as well as the exterior deck, stairs and railings that are pictured here were all built by European Timberframe.
